The Leinweber Institute for Theoretical Physics

Berkeley Center for Theoretical Physics

Welcome to the Leinweber Institute for Theoretical Physics!

The Leinweber Institute for Theoretical Physics at UC Berkeley (formerly the Berkeley Center for Theoretical Physics) was founded at the turn of the millennium with the goal of bringing together the greatest minds in theoretical physics to collaborate on some of the most pressing scientific questions about the Universe. LITP is a center within the Mathematical & Physical Sciences Division in the College of Letters & Science at UC Berkeley, with its main location on the UC Berkeley campus.

Furthering our understanding of matter, spacetime, and the Universe—more specifically quantum gravity, quantum field theory and string theory, particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology, as well as the quantum theory of matter and quantum information—lies at the heart of the LITP’s mission.

The key to progress and discovery within the LITP is its people. At the core are the faculty, whose careers are distinguished by revolutionary contributions to frontier research, and by the teaching and mentoring of students. Postdoctoral fellows and graduate students are also central to LITP, playing essential roles in collaborations at both the national and international levels.
